The research team from Speech and Hearing Science Research Institute of CHF has been awarded the Annual Editor’s Award from the American Journal of Audiology for their paper titled “Children With Unilateral Hearing Loss After Newborn Hearing Screening in Taiwan”!
Understanding Policy Impact and the Needs of Families with Unilateral Hearing Loss
The study reveals that Taiwan’s newborn hearing screening program, implemented since 2012, has positively impacted the detection and treatment of children with unilateral hearing loss. The age at diagnosis and intervention for these children has steadily lowered, and five years after the policy’s implementation, most parents sought hearing and speech services for their children before the age of one, allowing early use of auditory aids. However, the team also found that parents of children with unilateral hearing loss often feel uncertain about auditory aids and speech therapy. Nonetheless, children who receive auditory and speech intervention can achieve language performance comparable to their peers. Therefore, it is crucial to enhance educational outreach to parents about the benefits of auditory aids and therapy for children with unilateral hearing loss.
